The Liberal government of Ontario has passed new legislation affecting local workers.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Ontario Liberals have passed the new Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act.
Covering a broad spectrum, the act will ensure many new benefits for Ontarians.
Among them includes the much anticipated increase of minimum wage to $14/hr, which will now officially roll out in the new year with an additional increase to $15/hr in January 2019.
The Minister of Labour, Kevin Flynn is happy the act has now received Royal Assent.
“Our new legislation addresses the needs of the modern workplace and provides a minimum wage workers can actually live on. We can build a better, fairer Ontario for everyone.”
Additionally, the Act increases mandatory vacation to three weeks for employees serving at least five years as well as wage equity for part time, seasonal and temporary employees.
The government has increased the financial penalties for employers that don't abide by the new rules, in addition to publishing the company name if fined.
