The report from staff detailed how the city could partner with local stakeholders to create more childcare spaces.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council now has some options on the table for supporting more childcare spaces.
Councillor Kate Leatherbarrow brought forward a motion back in June, asking City Council to support the creation of more childcare spaces and direct staff to create a report on how the City could partner with local stakeholders to make it happen.
That report was brought to Council Thursday night, and Mayor Jerry Acchione tells us about some of the options that were listed.
"Consideration of child care space in municipal buildings and encouraging employers to create child care space within private businesses. We can also partner with developers to help integrate childcare space into residential or commercial developments. So it's just partnerships to make child care more accessible with more spaces."
Some of the other options included providing incentives for home-based child care in the Community Improvement Plan and encouraging employers to create childcare space within private businesses.
Council approved the recommendations in the report and staff will bring more forward during another meeting.
Acchione says this is all leading to a policy that would require the city to consider making more childcare spaces whenever a new build is happening.
"So if it's a new arena that we're building for example, a part of our policy will be looking at having child care in there if at all possible."
