Woodstock City Council wants to put more power in the hands of local municipalities.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council is supporting an initiative that was brought forward by the OPAL Alliance.
They want to put the power back in the hands of local governments; allowing them to decide whether or not they want a landfill in their community. Council is also encouraging other municipalities to follow suit.
OPAL President Bryan Smith is glad the cause received unanimous support at last night's meeting.
"Ultimately its ask is very simple. Its ask is that the provincial government recognise the value and contribution of municipal governments and I think that's something we need to do. The public trusts municipal governments more than they trust any other level so that's where decisions need to be made."
The OPAL Alliance collected petition signatures at their Stomp the Dump Rally this past Sunday. Another petition also circulated around St James Church that day; garnering support for Bill C355. That bill would protect the Thames River and also stop the dump.
