The Woodstock Police Service has some tips for everyone as the kids get ready for the summer vacation.
WOODSTOCK - Today is the last day of school and the start of the summer holiday for students in Oxford County and beyond.
Pritpal Thind, the Media Relations and Community Safety Officer for the Woodstock Police Service, says they want to make sure everyone has a safe and fun time over the next few months.
"Summer is meant to be enjoyed, so we encourage everyone to take a few simple precautions so the summer can be safe and enjoyable for our entire community in Woodstock, Oxford and beyond."
He says lots of kids will be outside enjoying the nice weather.
"We'll see them walking in the parks, riding their bikes and simply enjoying the summer. So it is a good reminder for drivers in the community to slow down, stay alert, and expect increased traffic whether it's pedestrian traffic or bike traffic, especially in residential areas."
He adds parents should know where their kids are at all times, and they should have a safety plan in place for emergency situations. It's also a good idea to talk to them about online safety to make sure they are not sharing personal information with strangers online through social media.
It's important to wear a helmet if you're out on a bike, scooter or e-bike.
If you are spending time around water, it's important to know your ability and plan accordingly. Make sure you wear a life jacket when you're on a boat and there should be an adult present for any swimming activities.
Thind also has some advice for families planning any trips this summer.
"Before heading out they should take a few moments to secure their home. Lock their doors, lock their windows, and avoid posting vacation plans on social media until they have returned. These small steps can make a big difference."
It's also a good idea to have a trusted friend or family member check in on your home while you're away.
