A councillor in Zorra Township is running in the upcoming municipal election, but is looking to switch roles.
ZORRA - A familiar face has entered the mayoral race in Zorra Township.
Katie Grigg has decided to run for Mayor after serving two terms as the Ward 2 councillor.
She has a lot of highlights from her time on council, starting off with her first council meeting. She was the only female councillor at the time, and she recently gave birth, so she brought her two-week-old child with her to council chambers.
During her first term on council, she also introduced a motion to make some renovations at the Thamesford Arena. Grigg says four of the change rooms only had urinals, so girls had to go to the main lobby if they had to use the restroom.
"It was expensive plumbing, but it was important work! The messaging to young girls playing hockey couldn't be that we'll let you play in the boys' space, it had to be that this is a community space for everyone to participate."
Grigg also introduced a motion to develop an asset naming policy for municipal parks, streets and facilities. A framework is now in place which allows residents to submit their ideas, so they're included in the registry of possible names that could be used.
In recent years, Grigg was involved in the work that led to the co-build with the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB), which will bring a new school to Thamesford. That school will also have enhanced recreation facilities that the municipality will be able to utilize during the evenings and weekends.
Grigg says she is a natural student and creative problem solver, and she would like to bring everything she has learned as a councillor to the next level.
"There is so much experience and knowledge that I have acquired that I see so much opportunity in this next stretch of time. I am still excited about the work, I am still seeing the opportunity in the work, so I would like to continue serving my community."
She would love to see the co-build with the TVDSB through as the Mayor. She would also like to be involved in the new Official Plan that's being formed for Oxford County.
Grigg has a passion for serving the community she loves.
"I get so excited to understand what is making residents curious, what they're upset about, how they are experiencing things, and apply the knowledge that I have or find out what can be done. What is the framework for how this works? What can we do? Where are we limited? These conversations are so exciting to be a part of, and that tells me that I am not done yet in this work."
The municipal election is scheduled for October 26th.
