Woodstock City council has waived the fees for a Community Garden plot at Cottle Park, as Southside School students will be planting vegetables, then donating to those in need in the Friendly City.
WOODSTOCK - Grade 5 students at Southside School will begin a new project that will see them plant and give vegetables to others in need.
Woodstock City council unanimously voted to waive the fees of a plot the students will use at Cottle Park's Community Garden.
Mayor Trevor Birtch says council is excited to see young people come forward with good ideas and drive.
"It takes a lot of courage to put a presentation together for any member of the community to come to council, but especially if you're in Grade 5, I think it's extra special."
The plot costs $25.00 per year and Mayor Birtch says the fees will be waived for the next four years.
He adds Cottle Park was chosen because of how close it was to the school. It's located on Salter Avenue.
11 year-old student Kaitlyn Curry was on hand at last night's council meeting, asking for the garden plot fees to be waived.
She says they'll plant vegetables before they're canned and donated throughout the community.
"I just feel bad for the people that can't get food with their money, so it's nice to donate."
The students are starting this project with the South Gate Centre, The Inn, Woodstock and District Developmental Services (Nexus Program members) and Southside families. According to Curry's presentation, the volunteers from Nexus will care for the plants over the summer with a few volunteers from Southside.
Once harvested, South Gate volunteers will work with the Grade 5 students, along with a few of the Eco Schools Earth Shepards to produce canned goods.
The canned goods will be donated to The Inn, residents at Harvey Woods Lofts and the Salvation Army Food Bank.
The project will start later this year.
