DART is raising awareness about the dangers of strangulation this month.
OXFORD COUNTY - A campaign has begun to raise awareness about strangulation.
The Domestic Abuse Resource Team (DART) has joined with their partners to educate people about the dangers and side effects of strangulation. Oxford DART member Sophie Foster explains why the campaign began.
"One challenge that we've seen for a while now is a rise in strangulation, which is really unfortunate and obviously very scary. And so, as a group, we decided to kind of build this campaign so that we could bring awareness to it in our community."
Foster mentions the rise could be from people seeing the normalization of strangulation on social media, like TikTok challenges, and other videos. She adds the Domestic Abuse Services Oxford (DASO) crisis line is always open if you encounter issues.
"There's crisis in the title, but you don't necessarily have to be in a crisis to call. You can call and just ask hypothetical questions. You know, if this happened to me, what do I do? We want you to call. We want you to ask questions. If maybe you have been strangled, we definitely want you to go to get checked out."
Foster says it's very important to get checked out, as damage from strangulation can happen quickly.
Sophie Foster stopped by the Heart FM studio to chat with Dan and Marcie on Friday, May 15th. You can listen to the full interview below:
