WOODSTOCK - A local chapel will become a historical site in the City of Woodstock.
City Council approved the designation for the Hawkins Chapel on Park Row during last night's meeting.
It has been around since 1888, where it helped provide service to approximately 75 local black families. Manager of culture Karen Houston says the chapel remains in the exact same spot today.
"It's important not just to Woodstock, as there were about 11 black chapels constructed by the same denomination across Ontario, and this is one of the last ones that's in its original location."
Councillor Liz Wismer-Van Meer says the discussions surrounding the designation of this chapel have been taking place for quite some time.
"2023, I think, is when the original conversations started so here we are in 2026, and we've finally been able to get that approval from council."
