How to Survive a Bear Attack by Claire Cameron has been selected as the Oxford Reads title for 2026.
OXFORD - The Oxford Reads selection for 2026 has been announced.
How to Survive a Bear Attack will be at the center of the county-wide book club this year.
It's an award-winning memoir by Claire Cameron, where she examines a fatal bear attack that happened in Algonquin Park back in 1991 in addition to her own experiences with illness, motherhood, fear and survival.
Gillian Green, the Public Services Supervisor for the Woodstock Public Library, says it's an excellent choice.
"We’re excited to share How to Survive a Bear Attack as the Oxford Reads 2026 title. It’s a gripping, heartfelt story, and Claire Cameron brings the wilderness to life in a way that’s sure to engage our community in great conversations and inspire a deeper sense of connection."
Sarah Adam, the System Support Librarian for Oxford County, says How to Survive a Bear Attack is a mix of journalism, memoir and nature writing.
"We’re excited to invite readers across Oxford County to discover Claire Cameron’s remarkable book together. How to Survive a Bear Attack is a thought-provoking and deeply human story that explores our relationship with nature, fear, loss and survival. We look forward to the conversations it will inspire across our communities."
Copies of the book can be found at the Woodstock Public Library and the Oxford County Library branches.
Additional programming will be announced later this year, as we get closer to the Oxford Reads Gala in the fall.
Voting for the 2026 Oxford Reads title took place in the spring.
