WOODSTOCK - It's time for the mayor to face the scissors.
Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch says he's happy to rock the long look for a few months if it means someone battling cancer can have a nice new wig. "So it's been about 20 months since the last hair cut for cancer and I think there's going to be a lot of people wanting to line up to cut the locks. There's still time to make donations online and you can make donations in person at City Hall that day, and even in the days following when you see my new look."
This is the second time Birtch will cut his hair for cancer, and he's seen how devastating the disease can be for a family. "Cancer touches so many people's lives whether it's directly in the family, themselves personally, or coworkers or neighbours and for myself, my mother's battle with cancer at a young age. It's one of those things where when she had a wig to put on a saw a smile come back to her face and it makes a huge difference. "
The fundraising goal this time around is $3,000. "In addition to all the donations I've received I would say I'm just under the half way mark on my goal," Birtch says. "So I'm counting on more support from the City of Woodstock for this great cause - it will help raise more awareness, and put more money into research, and part of the proceeds will go into making the new wig to put a smile on a survivor's face."
You can donate to the cause at the Canadian Cancer Society's Page.
