They also proposed an act to strengthen the oversight of payments handled by talent agencies in the entertainment industry.

TORONTO - Those working at large companies may not be getting charged for uniforms anymore.

The government proposed changes to the Employments Standards Act, 2000 that if passed, would ban employers at large companies from requiring employees to pay for uniforms, ensuring employees are not forced to pay any money out of pocket just to do their jobs.

If passed, the government would also consult on certain exemptions such as small businesses with the change addressing a common cost barrier, mainly in retail, hospitality and food service jobs.

In addition, the government is also proposing to establish the Strengthening Talent Agency Regulation (STAR) Act to strengthen the oversight of payments handled by talent agencies in the entertainment industry. The proposed changes would set a limit on commission rates, prohibit fees other than commissions and fees that are allowed by regulation, require timely payment to workers and mandate a separate bank account for funds owing to entertainers.

These changes are designed to make Ontario the most competitive in the G7 to invest, create jobs and do business. The full release can be found here.
