Province Introduces New Legislation to Modernize Ontario's Education System

Education Minister Stephen Lecce has introduced new legislation to modernize Ontario's education system.

If passed, the "Better Schools and Student Outcomes Act" would allow the province to set priorities in areas on student achievement.

While the exact priorities haven't been released yet, officials say they will focus on areas like math and reading.

"We are taking action to refocus Ontario’s education system on what really matters: strengthening reading, writing and math skills," said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education. "Our proposed legislation would centre the education system on preparing students to succeed in life and work, putting more highly qualified educators in the classroom while ensuring parents have the information they need at their fingertips to support their kids. These reforms would ensure students graduate with a competitive advantage while learning modern lessons in modern schools, preparing them for the jobs of the future."

Yesterday, Lecce said the province would spend over $180 million to hire 1,000 new teachers to focus on math and literacy skills.

Today, Lecce noted the bill also includes provisions for another 940 teachers to support students in grades 7-10 with the transition into high school and in de-streamed courses.

The bill would also require trustees and senior school board officials to receive standardized training on provincial priorities.

A significant part of the bill includes creating a framework for surplus school property, and can include schools that are closed or will not be used to accommodate future students.

Officials say the goal is to better leverage propriety for public education and priorities like affordable housing and long-term care homes.
