People are welcome to come to Museum Square to remember and honour Red Dress Day.
WOODSTOCK - It's a day to honour and remember missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirited people.
Today is Red Dress Day, and a special vigil will take place in Museum Square from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Becca Neepin is the organizer of this local event, which shines a light on the crisis in Canada.
"Indigenous women and girls make up only four percent of the population, but they account for 24 percent of the female homicide victims. This shows how serious this issue is. It's about honouring the lives that were taken, standing with families, and making sure these women are loved and loved ones are not forgotten."
Neepin says the Woodstock event will be more than just a candlelight vigil.
"We have speakers coming that have the lived experience of this, so it's going to be very knowledgeable. We also have our drummers, so you can feel the heartbeat of Mother Earth while you're there with us."
They will also hold a moment of silence, and there will be a craft table where you can make your own candle holder for the candlelight vigil. They will have red dresses on display as well, to represent the spirit of missing and murdered women and girls.
Neepin says it will be a safe space for reflection, connection and support. She's welcoming everyone to attend this event, but is encouraging people to wear red in honour of the victims and their families.
