Oxford County Council made a move to take part in a plan to bring high speed fibre internet to the County.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Council approved a motion to contribute to an initiative that would bring ultra high-speed fibre internet connection to rural areas in Southwestern Ontario including Oxford County.
SWIFT or Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology is hoping to bring the highspeed internet to rural areas.
According to East Zorra Tavistock Mayor, Don McKay, Phase One of the project is an estimated $243 million with 15 rural municipalities involved making yearly contributions.
McKay warns that the 20 year project is not something that will happen overnight.
"For rural Oxford County this is everything, we've got some wireless and that's great for small individual needs but when it comes to larger needs especially for business and healthcare we have to have that high-speed."
In a presentation to County Council, SWIFT pointed out that Canada is signficantly behind when it comes to fibre internet connection.
