Huron Perth Public Health has multiple resources available online and in the community to help residents quit smoking.

PERTH/HURON - It is Non-Smoking Week across Canada.

From January 19th to the 25th, Huron Perth Public Health is highlighting ways local residents can receive support to quit smoking for good.

Public Promoter Jaelyn Kloepfer says the initiative has been a success this year.

"If you know somebody who is quitting smoking or working at staying smoke-free, this is a great week to congratulate them, ask them how you can support them."

She adds if you are someone who is quitting smoking, she encourages you to reach out for support.

HHPH is offering ways residents can quit smoking and remain smoke-free through resources online and in the community.

She says they provide support year-round.

"We can work with someone any time of the year to come up with that quit plan and go over all of the options and support with them that are available."

One-on-one counselling is just one of the things the HPPH is offering. The other ways you can help is through free nicotine replacement therapy when eligible and connecting to community resources.

National Non-Smoking Week takes place on the third week of January each year and focuses on helping people quit smoking and preventing people from starting to smoke.

Other free resources that are available include the Smokers’ Helpline. You can text iQuit to 123456 for texting support or by visiting some doctors offices or pharmacies.

Health units across Southwestern Ontario are sharing inspirational stories about those who quit smoking called Start Your Quit Story Campaign. Stories can be found throughout the campaign, including one from Matthew who quit smoking in 2013.

You can read Matthew's full story and others, along with tips and support on their Facebook page.

Health Canada and Canadian Cancer Society are also launching the Ultimate Break It Off Challenge.

It is designed to encourage young adults to quit smoking and remain smoke-free. People between the ages of 18 to 29 can register in one of three categories for the contest: quitting smoking, staying smoke-free or supporting a friend in their quit journey.

You can register by February 6th and cash prize draws will be given on March 20th.

You can visit their website to learn more information.
