The Ingersoll Neighborhood Watch Community has nearly 1500 members so far since it started in September of 2019.
INGERSOLL - After a break-in happened at his shop in Ingersoll, Jamie Shields decided to start a community watch group on Facebook.
The Ingersoll Neighborhood Watch Community has been online since September of last year and it has close to 1500 members so far.
Shields says the group looks out for small crimes, including bike thefts.
"We try and keep it absolutely non-vigilante, try and keep it so that we're not posting people that are underage or maybe doing something that's innocent."
Shields says there have been people caught on camera breaking into tip jars.
He is the admin and creator of the group and he says it provides a platform to people online.
"The more we know, the safer we are right? So we can get the more information out there to the community and they can make their own decisions."
Shields says the group prides itself on being non-vigilante and it does not condone that behaviour.
He adds any crime that they do find, they report it to Crime Stoppers. He says one of the group administrators is fairly close with the Oxford OPP and they'll able to relay the information through Crime Stoppers and the non-emergency line. He says they try to avoid calling 911 unless it's an absolute emergency because they don't want to tie the line.
Shields says everyone is welcome and if you wish to be a part of the group, you can simply add them on Facebook. He says everyone is welcome to join throughout Oxford County.
