The lead agency for child and youth mental wellness in Oxford County is providing parents with some crucial tips on how to talk to your kids during a pandemic.
OXFORD COUNTY - The lead agency for child and youth mental wellness in Oxford and Elgin County is providing parents with some crucial tips.
Wellkin Child and Youth Mental Wellness suggests that children and youth with anxiety disorders may find information on COVID-19 especially worrisome.
Parents are encouraged to stay informed through trusted sources of information.
Focus on the details that are most relevant and/or things that you and your child can control.
Try to limit routine changes where possible where ever possible. Routine allows for predictability, which can be supportive for those with anxiety disorders.
Share information in as concrete a way as possible. Speak to children and youth as adults about the ways you and the other adults around them are helping to keep them safe.
Correct misinformation. Help your child/teen to have the facts to work with. Ask them what they know about Coronavirus and what they have ‘heard’ (from friends, media, family members, etc.)
Strategic News Exposure. Last, but in no way least, limit exposure to unnecessary anxiety-provoking information/activities.
You can find more information and additional resources on this from the Wellkin web site online here.
