The public will be asked to vote on what they think the official bird of Woodstock should be.
WOODSTOCK - The Friendly City is looking to name their official bird.
Woodstock was designated as a Bird Friendly City by Nature Canada. This national certification program recognizes municipalities that are taking actions to reduce threats to birds, protect and restore habitats, and engage the community through ongoing education and outreach. Mayor Jerry Acchione says what birds have been recommended.
"We want to see what the public thinks of choosing one of the three that have been recommended by the environmental committee. So, they are an Eastern Goldfinch, a Black-Capped Chickadee, and a Song Sparrow."
Acchione mentions that if anyone is familiar with the Peanuts cartoon, they will know that the bird named Woodstock is an Eastern Goldfinch. He adds that he likes all three options.
"All three are friendly birds, and I think they represent the Friendly City, Woodstock, quite well."
Residents will be invited to vote through an online poll or in person at City Hall from June 3 until July 2, and more information will be posted on the Let's Talk Woodstock website.
